Let me start by saying that there is no aspect of coiling that I enjoy. I really don’t like the lack of control, the lack of direction, the absolutely impossible feat of having a shape in mind that is so beyond my ability to achieve that I lose interest the moment it begins to take on its own life.
Added to my innate dislike of this form of building I completely misread the brief, or rather unconsciously read what I wanted to read rather than what was asked.
The first challenge was to build a cylinder with a maximum width of 12cm and get it as high as possible….behold my cylinder! My cylinder is not a cylinder and the base is only 12cm in one direction….
Rather than smooth down the coils on the outside I decided to make the joining of them part of the end design. I’ll admit I do like the texture and it is a fast way to achieve height but I’m still not convinced!
Meanwhile the actual brief…
It did get high quickly and it was a lot more enjoyable than I’d thought it would be. I can see the potential.
