I have a friend who regularly dreams those dreams of frustration where you’re always searching for something you can’t find.
This is my life.
I can’t find the perfect pink glaze in either earthenware or stoneware BUT I am one step nearer with the stoneware. I want a shade that’s part candy floss meets Barbie and yet at the same time is on the subtle side….yes, quite a challenge.
Using a Mike Bailey Cone 6 glaze as a transparent base, I have used a number of stains to create shades of pink.
The first batch all have a 10% addition of stain.
Mike Bailey Cone 6 T12 transparent base glaze recipe
Potash Feldspar. 44
China Clay. 6
Bentonite. 2
Lithium Carbonate. 4
Whiting. 14
Zinc Oxide. 5
Quartz/Flint. 24
It’s a glaze I consider bullet proof having used it countless times, and fits really well with Scarva’s Earthstone ES5 white stoneware clay.
The best so far is the baby pink. But then again, this quest for pink is down to the Kiss Me Quick hat I bought and just wanting to replicate it on ceramic.
I have decided to rethink the earthenware tests and plum for the Emmanuel Cooper recipe but add different percentages of colour and different colours. I realise that I’ve been bolder with the stoneware testing than the earthenware, possibly because I’m more comfortable with stoneware full stop.
